Capitalism Saves Planet Organic?

There seems to be no shortage of organic grocer's or grocery stores carrying organic goods in Vancouver these days. Perhaps that's why Canada's once thriving Planet Organic never got a chance to get a foot hold closer than Port Coquitlam. Now its hard to say if it ever will. Planet Organic was Canada's largest organic food retailer but on April 29, 2010, the company filed for bankruptcy under Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act in Ontario Superior Court of Justice. The food chain was acquired by the private equity firm Catalyst Capital Group Inc.

Catalyst purchases struggling companies with undervalued debt or equity and restructures, firing up a storm and cutting costs. In Fact, Catalyst was responsible for the series of events (no pun intended) that lead to Conrad Black being kicked off Hollinger Inc.'s board and subsequently the rest of the mess that ensued for him. It's not so surprising then that this company has perturbed some, but has it saved Planet Organic? (source)

Who knows what the plans are for the "once?" struggling chain, but it has been a year now since the bankruptcy for Planet Organic and stepping into the Victoria store one finds what appears to be a cheery, thriving, little organic grocer. Things look fresh and full. The prices are, well, your standard organic prices. The odd enticing little deal pokes out like "Boulder Chips two bags for $5.00", that was a little exciting. So for those of you who are committed to shopping organic, it seems that Planet Organic still has something to offer as far a grocery shopping experience is concerned with a great selection of supplements to follow that up.

It seems a little regretful that the wholesome little story behind this well meaning business has now been tarnished by bankruptcies, mergers and acquisitions but it is still organic and in Greater Vancouver so this can't be so bad.
